How often do you update your website’s content?
When was the last time you updated your website’s content? Not since it was first published several years ago? A couple of years ago? Last year? Six months ago?
3 reasons why it matters
I recommend you update your content at least once every couple of months, but once a month or more often would be even better. Here are 3 reasons why updating your content regularly matters.
- Adding new content on a regular basis improves Search Engine Optimization. If it’s been a long time since you updated your website’s content, search engines may assume your website is dormant and not bother to crawl your site. This will lower your search engine results page rank which will make it harder for new customers to find you on the internet.
- Adding new content on a regular basis keeps your website fresh and current. It shows your regular customers that you are keeping up to date with new ideas, techniques, products or services which in turn will keep them coming back for more. They will also be more inclined to refer you to colleagues and friends who may need your product or service which will ultimately lead to new business.
- Combined with Google analytics, updating your content allows you to see what works and what doesn’t. By changing how, where and when you present new content or changing up your old content, then reviewing your visitor statistics to see who’s reading it, how long they stayed, whether they clicked your call to action, etc., you can determine what type of content works best for bringing traffic to your website and what type of content receives the best ROI.
New content can be as simple as a new FAQ, tip or resource, a special offer, new product or service offering. If you use WordPress, a short blog article on a current topic relevant to your customers’ interests. Uploading a new photo to your portfolio with description/caption. Changing up your welcome message and home page banner to match the season.
